To him, the people were overreacting. All this gossip and worrying wasn't going to help the kingdom. Personally, he was just going to ignore it. Why would he do anything about all of it? He was just a simple bard, barely getting by with what little money his occupation brought in.
"Oi, Delaney! We're closing up for the night, you can go home now!"
Tired golden eyes scanned the room, searching for the owner of the voice. Or, rather, the owner of the small, worn down tavern his latest 'gig' had been at. He forced a smile on to his face, nodding to the stout man behind the bar. "I'll see ya later, sir!" His voice was cheerful and energetic, despite the exhaustion clear as day on his face. Slinging his faithful, old guitar over his shoulder, the boy headed for the wooden door.
"Don't overwork yerself, kid."
He lifted his hand to bid farewell to the tavern owner, disregarding the advice. He would have to overwork himself to get even a small loaf of bread. Times were tough, but he could do nothing about it. His long tail flicked idly by his legs, bouncing every now and again as he walked. The boy glanced up at the sky, halting his steps so he didn't run into anyone by accident. He didn't know why he even would. Judging by the position of the moon, it was almost midnight. The only people out would be the drunkards, those in the underground red light district, and, of course, him.
He sighed, watching as a light in one of the building went out. He might as well head on over to the little alley he had claimed as his own. With that thought in mind, the young neko began walking again, humming an old lullaby his mother used to sing to him and his sister so they would sleep.

- evander | midnight | startled -[[ profile | journal ]] the inside lingo had me at hello. 'Oh, you're cute. For you, its free. Come on. Come this way.' Touching the prince was not something to be done lightly, but there she was, throwing herself upon his arm, tugging him toward who-knows-what. He wasn't sure a moment like this had ever occurred in his entire twenty-one years of life. Where were his servants? Where were the guards? Unlike in Dubonna, there were none within sight when his eyes scanned the darkness. No one knew who he was. No one was going to handle this.
"No, no, that won't be necessary.
" Chevalier murmured nervously. " Please, let me go, m'lady." The prince tugged his hand free, his eyes wide with surprise. Maybe this was why his father cautioned him not to wander too far. Once his hand was free, Chevalier let out a breath he hadn't known he'd been keeping in, before he muttered a polite 'thank you' and turned away, making his way down the streets in silence. His pace was quicker. The sooner he got somewhere familiar, or met up with a Dubonna citizen, the better. He didn't even care if it was a servant or a guard- even a simple commoner would ease his nerves. The moment he heard a woman speaking behind him, he made a dash for the nearby alley, hiding in the darkness. He had no idea what she'd said or even if she was talking to him. It didn't matter much to him. It wasn't very proper for him to run, but it wasn't very proper to be seen with woman who hung all over him, either, so he could only hope people would understand. " Oh, King Grey..." Chevalier murmured, leaning back against the wall he'd ran to. What a kingdom. It was nothing like home, and it was nothing like he remembered from his childhood. The idea of a kingdom falling was always startling, but it was all the more frightening when signs of it's deterioration were visible.[/blockquote] ✘ chevy

While there wasn't anyone out to be respectful of, he didn't want any bugs flying into his mouth. The last time that happened was not a pleasant memory. Continuing with his disrupted humming, the young musician turned a few short corners until he neared one of the few alleyways he sometimes slept in. It was a bit too close to certain places for his liking, but it was a comfortable alley. If... That even made any sense...
Golden ears perked, the humming ceasing, and his footsteps halting as a soft voice, probably just a murmur, reached his ears. Someone else was in the alley? Now, that wasn't something that happened often. When it did, he would just turn and go off to another alley. But, tonight was different. What was so different? He was too tired to care if the other person was a mugger or anyone else who could cause him harm.
He blinked a few times, letting the moonlight make out the form of a man. His eyes had adjusted quite quickly to the darkness from many years on the street, so a few finer details were shown as well. The man looked higher up on the social ladder, so why was he out in an alley? His tail curled around his leg while his mind made up many possibilities as to why he was here. With a gulp, the boy called out to the other occupant of the alley. "Isn't it a little dangerous for the rich to be out and about at night?"

- evander | midnight | startled -[[ profile | journal ]] the inside lingo had me at hello. "Apparently,
" Chevalier mumbled. He doubted the boy could hear him, but it was of little consequence if he did. " Yes- sir. I'm not from around here." Chevalier spoke louder this time. Unlike Evander, his own eyes strained against the darkness to make out any sign of the source of the voice while his mind took in the words spoken. Rich? Well, maybe he was dressed a little extravagantly. He was wearing one of his fine jackets, tailored black pants, and fine shoes. At least he'd left the articles of jewelery, including the crown, at the castle. " Is the condition always this way? Is it always dangerous on the streets? Are you in danger?" Chevalier prompted inquisitively. He certainly hoped the answer was no. But the way the lady had acted, he doubted she'd only approached him in her lifetime. Realizing that, all things considered, he should introduce himself, he took a step away from the wall. " I'm sorry- how rude of me. My name's Chevalier. And you are?" Chevalier introduced politely. His mother had always taught him to introduce himself. She also taught him to do so properly, which included the title of 'prince' and the royal name, Lafraniere. But one out of three wasn't bad, was it? At least he hadn't forgotten altogether.[/blockquote] ✘ chevy

Ah, that was much better. He didn't have to strain to hear. The boy tilted his head to the side. So, he was from another kingdom, then? Who would want to come to a kingdom on the brink of being invaded by tyrants? Obviously this man, but... Still!
He yawned again, covering his mouth once more, this time in respect for the other man. Man, it was too late to be up. Then again, he's been up past two in the morning before. It all depended on what place would momentarily hire him. The young neko shook his head, golden bangs falling into his eyes. "No, no, and no." He giggled at the last part. Him, dangerous? The only thing he could do is bite and whack people over the head with Lux, but then she might get broken. He did not want his precious guitar to break. "Tensions have just been high lately, so people act out. Plus, we are kinda close to the red lights."
His tail slowly unwound itself, settling back to flicking back and forth like a metronome. "It's a pleasure to meet'cha, mister Chevalier. I'm Evander." He didn't need to give his last name if the other didn't as well. Besides, there wasn't a single penny to his name, so why give it?

- evander | midnight | very worried -[[ profile | journal ]] the inside lingo had me at hello. "Well, that's reassuring.
" Chevalier smiled in response to the boy's succession of no's. When he heard that they were close to the red lights, Chevalier's face got red with embarrassment and shame. " Th-the what?" The prince questioned incrediously. But despite his tone, it wasn't a question at all. " I can't be here... This won't do at all. Is there a path to escape here without being noticed?" Chevalier's eyes rose to the back of the alley, his mind racing with worry. Oh, if anyone ever heard of this! How could he be so foolish? Sure, he was unfamiliar with the area, but of all the places for a prince to be! " Please, you have to help me. This is very important." Chevalier's tone was literally pleading. That was... new. But he meant it. Whether it meant staying in the alley until light, or crawling through places no king should be reduced to exploring, Chevalier Lafraniere had to do damage control. No one else could see him. If it took bribing the kid to keep him hidden, Chevalier wasn't above it. At the moment, he wasn't above much, truthfully, though he didn't want to admit this aloud. All he could think about was how terrible it would be if word ever got back to his family that he'd ended up in such an unsavory place. Would they believe it was a mistake? He wasn't so sure.[/blockquote] ✘ chevy

He's been up way too long, but he can't go to sleep just yet. No, he had to help out the foreigner. He was fine with it, though. He had nothing better to do, and it meant getting a little farther away from the people of the night.
With a tired smile, he reached out to grab the man's wrist. "Sure thing, mister Chevalier~!" He began walking deeper into the alley instead of leaving it. He wanted to not be seen, so he won't be seen. "Some of the alleys connect to each other, and this alley just happens to be one of them." He continued walking, not really checking to make sure mister Chevalier was following. If he allowed him to grab his wrist, then he would be.
The boy halted his steps, blinking as he came to a fork in the 'road'. He looked both ways, trying to remember which way went where. Man, he was way too tired to be navigating. His ears perked as he picked up the faint noises of things he really didn't want to know about coming from one direction. So, he turned the opposite way, humming the lullaby from earlier. It was a great way to block out the noises from the red lights.

- evander | midnight | following uncertainly -[[ profile | journal ]] the inside lingo had me at hello. People were very physical here, weren't they? Chevalier instinctively raised an eyebrow at being touched by... Well, okay, despite the blond's appearance, Chevalier was impressed by the young boy. If it meant washing once again to rid himself of the dirt likely transfering from Evander to him, worse fates had transpired. And, anyway, he was making assumptions he had no way of proving in the darkness of the night.
Chevalier followed the boy's lead without protest, a smile finally gracing his features at the boy's willingness to help him. When they stopped, he briefly considered the trust he'd just put in the boy. What if the boy lead him into public anyway? The noises he heard nearby only added to his alarm. The kid was hanging out in an alley with that going on nearby? It hardly seemed proper.
To Chevy's further amazement, Evander began to hum. Now, wasn't that odd? Chevalier quickened his pace, wanting to stay in stride with the boy. There was something reassuring about physical contact to ensure neither were parted or lost by their own carelessness, so he didn't pull his hand away like he was inclined to.
"That's a beautiful melody,
" Chevalier murmured softly, reuctant to stop Evander from continuing with the lullaby.[/blockquote] ✘ chevy

The lullaby was starting to take its toll on the boy, and he would have started simply sleepwalking had it not been for the nagging voice in the back of his mind. Keep going, Evan. Mister Chevalier is depending on you.
|
Man, had that voice always been so annoying? His humming ceased when the man spoke up. He slowed down his pace as the maze of alleys opened up to the main section of the marketplace that was normally busy with people trying to haggle prices lower than they already were. But, it was graveyard empty right now, though brighter than the alleys had been. There were a few streetlamps scattered around, the dim glow giving off enough light for more details to be seen. Evander let go of the man's wrist, turning around to give him a tired smile. " My mother used to sing it to me so I'd sleep." His ears twitched and drooped as another yawn pried apart his yawn, only to be covered by his hand. " So, where are ya staying, mister Chevalier?" He might as well ask. He needed to know where to take the man so he didn't get lost on the way.[/div][/blockquote]

- evander | midnight | hesitant -[[ profile | journal ]] the inside lingo had me at hello. "Ah, I see.
" At the thought of a mother singing a beautiful lullaby, Chevy found himself smiling. It was hard not to. But this thought was overshadowed by the fact that he was now examining the streets of the market for any lurking individuals that may notice him. The question that followed about where he'd say was slightly startling, but nothing to worry about. He doubted Evander would be one to rob him in his sleep. Then again, Chevalier was a bit too trusting by nature. " I'm not sure." Chevy replied. It wasn't exactly a common topic of conversation, but he was pretty sure his father was invited to the castle if he intended on staying in a foreign kingdom. " Is there somewhere less... conspicuous than this area?" On second thought, the yawning was startling to him. He spoke up again, as if to override his previous question with a new one. " You seem tired. Maybe you should get home. I'm sorry for inconveniencing you." Chevalier murmured guiltily. It was times like this he knew he very, very spoiled. Worse yet, he felt odd offering money now that Evander wasn't asking for it, but he wouldn't mind helping out the boy if he needed it. As he considered a way to offer it without feeling awkward or unkind, his gaze shifted completely to Evander.[/blockquote] ✘ chevy

If you had money, that is. Lifting his hand, he pointed down one road leading out of the market. "There's a tavern down there..." He thought a moment longer before pointing down another road. "And, there's a hotel somewhere down there." He turned back to the man, giving another tired smile.
Home? Pfft. Yeah right. His tail swayed back and forth as his mind took a while to process that he was supposed to answer the man. It was way past Evander's bed time, that much was obvious. "Naw, it's fine." He was interrupted by another yawn. "My family's ten feet under, so they won't mind me being late." Wait, did he really just say that? He really should stop staying up so late. That's it, he was going to sleep at ten o'clock sharp from now on... If he can find a place to sleep, that is. Alleys weren't that comfortable.
His ears continued to droop, perking only when he caught himself about to fall asleep standing up. No, he couldn't sleep yet. He needed to make sure mister Chevalier got into a hotel or something safely.

- evander | midnight | sympathetic -[[ profile | journal ]] the inside lingo had me at hello. "Tavern...
" Chevalier repeated, his mind considering how many drunks would undoubtedly inhabit such a named place. Maybe that wasn't ideal. But the hotel may just as well be crowded, which would mean he couldn't escape the notice of others. Thoughts of his own situation were immediately pushed aside when he heard that his family was ten feet under. The idea that they could be dead was startling, especially since he had his family, and would one day have an entire kingdom. Why was it always the kindest people who had it the worse? " Well, if no one's waiting for you, how about you chose the place? I'll pay for you to stay there, in return for your kindness. I mean, if they would have saw me back there, I can't even begin to count the number of people who would have been angry with me." Chevalier offered. It seemed like a minute thing, paying for an extra room. If he thought Evander could have made the journey, he would have been just as happy inviting the young boy to stay at the kingdom for the night where it was nice and warm, and where Chevalier could assure he had a hot meal. On the other hand, his overly trusting nature was sure to get him into trouble.[/blockquote] ✘ chevy

Well, crap. And he would be getting a room that was going to be paid for... How much did this man have on him? He wasn't about to ask because, well, that was rude! His ears drooped at the thought of someone else paying for him. He didn't like that one bit. If he was going to stay anywhere, he might as well pay for it himself.
But, he was too tired to argue. He might as well pick the cheapest place so Mister Chevalier didn't have to waste too much money on him.
"The tavern it is, then!" Evander let out a chirp, turning to walk towards the tavern. It was a good thing the tavern owner had his night owl daughter take over around this time. Otherwise Mister Chevalier wouldn't be able to get a room. At least... He hoped there were rooms left. When he left the tavern only half and hour or so ago, they had a few open. Yeah, it should be open still. The boy blinked, glancing around the market as he walked. Barren. Good! The man didn't want to be seen, so... He wouldn't!
